In recent years, there have been numerous movies with incredibly outrageous plots that have left viewers questioning why studios would invest in them. Even a film like Keanu Reeves' "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" had a plot that seemed far-fetched, and Alex Winter, the star of the movie, admitted that no one believed it would actually be released. However, much to everyone's surprise, the film turned out to be a massive success, leading to the production of two sequels.
A similar situation occurred with Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie. The plot was undeniably outrageous, yet the film managed to become the highest-grossing film of 2023.
Even Margot Robbie, one of the actors in the film, initially thought the plot was too outlandish and assumed that the studios would never greenlight the project. However, much to her surprise, "Barbie" became a worldwide sensation, earning over $1.4 billion at the global box office.
"Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," released in 1989, centered around two friends, Bill and Ted, who used a phone booth time machine to gather historical figures for a history presentation at their high school. Despite its ridiculous premise, the production companies decided to move forward with a budget of $10 million.
Alex Winter, in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session in 2013, revealed that the film was an unexpected success. He stated, "That whole movie was a happy accident. No one thought it would ever see the light of day."
The film received positive reviews upon release and earned approximately $40 million, surpassing its $10 million budget. The success of "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" led to the creation of two sequels: "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" in 1991 and "Bill & Ted Face the Music" in 2020.
