And the snubs keep coming in the 2024 Oscar nominations. There were some expected nods, such as "Oppenheimer" receiving 13 nominations, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. But there were also some surprising choices and exclusions.
One of the most puzzling nominations was given to America Ferrera for her role in "Barbie." While she delivered a fine performance, it was not considered Oscar-worthy. In contrast, Margot Robbie, who starred in the same film, was snubbed. It's even more baffling considering that "Barbie" received a Best Picture nomination.
How can a movie be recognized for its overall quality without recognition for its director, Greta Gerwig?
Even the animated category had its share of snubs. Disney's "Wish," starring Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine, was completely ignored. It seems that even in this category, some deserving films were left out.
The Best Supporting Actor category had its fair share of exclusions as well. Leonardo DiCaprio's slimy portrayal in "Killers of the Flower Moon" and Charles Melton's heartbreaking performance in "May December" were both left out.
Many have called this a disgrace, considering the quality of their performances.
The movie "May December" also faced a significant snub, with only a Best Screenplay nod. Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and director Todd Haynes were all ignored, despite receiving Golden Globe nominations.
Emerald Fennell's provocative film, "Saltburn," starring Jacob Elordi, also didn't receive any recognition. Perhaps the Academy Awards found the bathtub scene or nude dancing too controversial. But at the very least, they could have recognized Barry Keoghan's performance.
With all these surprising choices and exclusions, we can only hope that host Jimmy Kimmel will bring some liveliness to this year's telecast.
The 2024 Oscars will be hosted by Kimmel and will air on March 10 on ABC, in a new earlier timeslot of 7 p.m.
