Margot Robbie, renowned for her successful acting career and two Oscar nominations, has also made a notable foray into filmmaking. In collaboration with Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Sophia Kerr, she co-founded LuckyChap Entertainment in 2014. Robbie's first venture as a film producer came with the critically acclaimed "I, Tonya," and she has since found success with projects like the highly anticipated 2023 film "Barbie" and the psychological thriller "Saltburn."
Recently, Robbie shared her candid views on the practice of releasing full-length movie trailers by mega studios, expressing her belief that it sacrifices the element of surprise.
In an interview with Variety, the "Barbie" star proposed a different approach for the marketing of "Saltburn." Rather than traditional 30-second teaser trailers, she suggested releasing brief snippets lasting seven to ten minutes.
Robbie believes that maintaining an element of mystery is crucial in effective storytelling. She expressed her dissatisfaction with trailers that condense the entire movie into a two-minute preview. According to her, this approach diminishes the impact of key moments within the context of the full story.
She added that such trailers often receive positive feedback based on high test scores, but in reality, they have given away the entire movie.
Moreover, Robbie emphasized the importance of preserving storytelling surprises, particularly for a film like "Saltburn" directed by a filmmaker known for her plot twists. In such cases, revealing significant moments in the trailer would significantly reduce their impact on the audience.
With LuckyChap Entertainment, Robbie aims to continue her string of successes. Notable titles produced by the company include "I, Tonya," "Birds of Prey," and "Promising Young Woman.
" Robbie and her co-founders have expressed their commitment to supporting filmmakers in taking bold and original storytelling approaches. While recognizing the risks involved, they prefer to challenge conventions rather than play it safe.
Robbie's upcoming project under LuckyChap Entertainment is "My Old As*," directed by Megan Park. The film is set to premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, further showcasing the company's dedication to pushing boundaries and delivering compelling stories.
