The concept of producing a live-action Barbie movie was initially mentioned in 2009. Progress commenced in April 2014 when Sony Pictures acquired the film rights. During that time, there were rumors circulating that Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were being considered for the role of Barbie. However, plans took a drastic turn when the rights were transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018. Starting from scratch, Gal Gadot, an actress, was initially approached for the role but had to decline due to conflicts in her schedule. Eventually, Margot Robbie was chosen for the role in 2019, and Greta Gerwig was appointed as the director and co-writer in 2020.
Gerwig then wrote a story specifically tailored for Robbie. In an interview, Robbie praised Gadot, and Gadot reciprocated the positive sentiment.
In 2019, Gal Gadot, an actress, was first approached for the role of Barbie in a live-action Barbie film. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, she had to decline the offer. Consequently, Margot Robbie was given the opportunity to take on the role. Robbie discussed Gadot's casting in a Vogue interview in May 2023, stating, "Gal Gadot is Barbie energy. Because Gal Gadot is so incredibly beautiful, but she possesses a sincerity and kindness that makes it impossible to hate her for it.
It's almost endearingly dorky. It's like she's just on the cusp of being a dork." After Robbie secured the role, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were appointed as the writers of the film, crafting a story specifically tailored to Robbie's portrayal of Barbie.
In an interview with Flaunt magazine, Gal Gadot acknowledged Robbie's kind words and reciprocated the positivity by praising the actress. Gadot stated, "I adore Margot. Margot is one of those women you just want to be friends with. She is funny, warm, fun, smart, and obviously incredibly talented.
She brings so much to the table. I would love to collaborate with Margot on any project. I was very touched by her comments. She warmed my heart with everything she said about me. I'm extremely excited for them, and I can't wait to see Barbie."
The live-action Barbie film achieved tremendous success, grossing $1.44 billion and attaining numerous milestones. It became the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time. The movie received various nominations and awards, including twelve Grammy Award nominations and two Golden Globe Awards. One of the Golden Globe Awards was for Best Original Song, "What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish.
