Margot Robbie rose to fame in Hollywood with her role as Naomi Lapaglia in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street. Since then, she has been receiving more and more lucrative roles, with her latest film, Barbie, becoming a worldwide phenomenon. However, one of the roles in between that stood out was her portrayal of Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.
In the film, which primarily focuses on the characters of Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth, Sharon Tate is more of an idea than a fully-developed character. Robbie's performance, despite her lack of dialogue, is commendable.
However, it is clear that there is a feeling of something missing when it comes to Tate's portrayal.
During the Cannes Film Festival premiere of the movie, Tarantino dismissed a journalist's questioning of the lack of dialogue for Robbie's character, emphasizing that Tate is meant to be an angelic presence throughout the film. Robbie was left to defend her role and the absence of dialogue.
Playing a character like Sharon Tate was a challenging task, considering her status as a symbol rather than a person.
Robbie believed that she had moments on screen that allowed her to honor Tate and convey the tragedy and loss of innocence without speaking.
Robbie appreciated the opportunity to explore the character on her own, as it is rare for her to spend so much time alone as a character. She felt confident that she was able to deliver what she wanted on screen.
Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood can be streamed on Hulu.
