Hillary Clinton has expressed her support for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig after they were overlooked for Best Actress and Best Director nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards. Clinton took to social media to share a statement, stating that both women were snubbed by the Academy. She wrote, "Greta & Margot, while it can be disappointing to not win the top awards, your millions of fans love you. You are both so much more than enough."
Robbie and Gerwig received an outpouring of support following the nominations, with Barbie, the film they were involved in, receiving eight nominations, including Best Picture.
Gerwig did receive a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, while Robbie was nominated as a producer for Best Picture. Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, both nominated in supporting categories for their roles in Barbie, also voiced their disappointment at Gerwig and Robbie's exclusions. Gosling stated that there is no Barbie movie without Gerwig and Robbie, while Ferrera praised their cultural and industry impact.
Michelle Yeoh, who won Best Actress at a previous Oscars ceremony, also expressed disappointment that the movie was not recognized in the leading actor and directing categories during an appearance on the Today show.
Clinton's statement seemed to allude to her own experience, as she referenced the popular vote she received in the 2016 presidential election but still lost to Donald Trump in the Electoral College.
