Whoopi Goldberg weighed in on the absence of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig from the 2024 Oscars nominations for Best Actress and Best Director. The EGOT winner, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990, explained on The View that these are not snubs but rather the result of the voting process. Goldberg clarified that the members of the Academy, including herself, vote for Best Picture nominations, and not every film can receive a nomination. She emphasized that not everyone gets a prize and the movies that individuals love may not be loved by the voting members.
Goldberg's co-panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin expressed her confusion regarding the missing moral of the story of Barbie.
She questioned why the focus was on celebrating the male character, Ken, and not the female lead, suggesting that this situation may inspire a sequel where Barbie goes to Hollywood and faces snubs from the elite who prefer Ken.
Griffin also highlighted the success of Barbie, which earned over a billion dollars at the box office in 2023. She urged studios to hire more female directors to produce blockbusters, stating that women make up half of the population and want to see these movies.
Despite not being nominated for Best Actress, Margot Robbie has received several awards for her lead role in Barbie, including nods at the Golden Globe Awards and Critics Choice Awards.
She is also eligible for an Oscar this year as a co-producer of the film. Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote Barbie, earned a Best Director nomination for her previous film Lady Bird. She and her husband Noah Baumbach received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Barbie.
The 2024 Oscars nominations included a diverse range of nominees. Lily Gladstone became the first Native American actress to be nominated for an Oscar, and many actors, including Emily Blunt, Jeffrey Wright, Sterling K. Brown, America Ferrera, and Cillian Murphy, received their first-ever acting nods. Nine women were nominated in the Best Picture category, and Justine Triet became the eighth woman to be nominated for Best Director.
