Renowned actress Margot Robbie, known for her ability to embody diverse characters on the silver screen, has recently opened up about her uncomfortable filming experience in the 2019 film Bombshell. Throughout her career, Robbie has consistently delivered exceptional performances that transcend the boundaries of acting, immersing audiences in the complexity of her characters. However, the film Bombshell posed a unique challenge for the actress.
In the movie, which follows the story of women at Fox News exposing former CEO Roger Ailes, Robbie played the character of Kayla. During a panel discussion at Lionsgate's The Contenders Los Angeles event, Robbie revealed her discomfort with one particular scene in the film.
This scene involved her character being asked to lift her skirt by Ailes in his office.
Both Robbie and her co-star John Lithgow felt disturbed by this scene. Robbie expressed her gratitude for the supportive on-set environment created by director Jay Roach and the crew. However, she emphasized that the content of the scene was incredibly disturbing. The prolonged discomfort experienced by her character, paired with Lithgow's minimal dialogue, highlighted the unsettling nature of the scene. According to Robbie, there was no escape from the discomfort during filming.
Similarly, Lithgow, who portrayed the former CEO of Fox News in the film, found the scene equally disturbing. He explained that the scene relied heavily on their performances, with minimal dialogue and mainly consisting of stage directions. Despite there being only 12 syllables spoken in about three minutes, the intensity of the scene made their hearts pound.
Both Robbie and Lithgow received praise for their performances in Bombshell, with Robbie earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Lithgow delivering a powerful portrayal of Ailes. The film ultimately won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
