Ryan Gosling recently addressed his feelings on the Oscars snubbing Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig in the Best Actress and Best Director categories for the movie "Barbie". In an interview with Variety, Gosling joked that if he said more about the snub, he would start challenging people to a beach-off on Malibu Beach. He also expressed how the film continues to provoke conversation and struggles to compare it to anything else.
Gosling's original statement expressed gratitude for his Best Actor nomination for his role in "Barbie," but also acknowledged the importance of Gerwig and Robbie in the film's success.
He claimed that there is no Ken without Barbie and no Barbie movie without Gerwig and Robbie. He expressed disappointment that they were not nominated in their respective categories, stating that their talent, grit, and genius played a crucial role in the film's success.
While Gerwig and Robbie were snubbed in their individual categories, "Barbie" received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The film has also made over $1 billion at the global box office. Gerwig is only the third female director to be up for the award.
Robbie addressed the snubs during a SAG-AFTRA discussion, stating that while she believes Gerwig should have been nominated as a director, she feels blessed and recognizes that it has been an incredible year for all films.
The 2024 Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and will air on ABC on March 10th at 8 p.m.
