Margot Robbie, 33, recently revealed that there may not be a sequel to the summer blockbuster "Barbie". When asked about the possibility of a follow-up, Robbie told the Associated Press, "I think we put everything into this one. We didn't build it to be a trilogy or something." She expressed admiration for director Greta Gerwig, saying, "It was like, Greta put everything into this movie, so I can't imagine what would be next."
"Barbie" features a star-studded cast including Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, and America Ferrera. The film follows the journey of the popular Mattel doll, played by Robbie, as she is forced to enter the real world after experiencing physical and emotional challenges in her utopian Barbieland.
Robbie also emphasized that having a female lead was not the main focus of the film. She explained, "Just because there's a female lead doesn't mean it's not going to appeal to all audiences. So, it's really important that 'Barbie' did well." The film has achieved tremendous success, grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide and surpassing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" as Warner Bros.'s highest-grossing movie.
Since its release in July, "Barbie" has not only inspired merchandise but also popular TikTok trends.
Users recreate the doll's iconic poses, despite warnings from podiatrists, and challenge traditional concepts of aging. Director Greta Gerwig expressed her surprise at the film's success, stating, "I wanted to make something anarchic and wild and funny and cathartic, and the idea that it's being received in that way is extraordinary."
Currently, "Barbie" ranks at No. 14 on the list of highest-grossing movies of all time. It is available for purchase or rental on Amazon and is also released on DVD. Although fans may not see a sequel, the film's impact and popularity continue to resonate.
