Brad Pitt is undeniably a powerhouse in the entertainment industry, capable of pulling in staggering numbers with every film he stars in. It comes as no surprise that he was included in Forbes's list of Highest-Paid Entertainers in 2023. Pitt's extravagant lifestyle is a testament to the incredible sums he commands for his movie roles.
Even when a film turns out to be a major box office disappointment, it still manages to yield a considerable paycheck for Brad Pitt. Babylon, released in 2022 and featuring a star-studded cast including Margot Robbie and Tobey Maguire, had a budget of $110 million but barely surpassed the $65 million mark worldwide.
Although it was a massive failure in terms of box office performance, Pitt managed to secure over a quarter of the film's earnings for his involvement.
The 60-year-old actor smartly avoids putting his own shares at risk by ensuring that his fees are guaranteed upfront. In the case of Babylon, Pitt received a handsome sum of $20 million. This is in addition to his ownership of the French winery Chateau Miraval, which he co-owned with his ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
Directed by Damien Chazelle, Babylon aimed to reach the same heights as Chazelle's critically acclaimed film La La Land.
However, its story, which centered around the evolution of Hollywood from silent films to modern cinema, failed to resonate with the intended audience. Despite its box office failure, the film managed to earn a decent IMDb rating of 7.1 and received three Academy Award nominations, primarily in categories such as design and music. Pitt received the highest salary for his contribution, followed by Margot Robbie, who received a $5 million paycheck, making her one of the highest-earning stars in the film.
However, Babylon wasn't the only financial success for Pitt in 2022. He also earned equal shares of $30 million from his roles in Bullet Train and The Lost City.
It's clear that Pitt has a knack for generating sky-high profits, both from his acting career and his shrewd business ventures. In 2001, he and Jennifer Aniston established the production company Plan B Productions, which Pitt took sole ownership of after their divorce four years later, along with an additional $30 million. The company has been a consistent moneymaker, producing critically acclaimed films such as Moonlight, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Selma, and Twelve Years a Slave.
Despite his tremendous success, retirement doesn't seem to be on the horizon for Pitt. He is currently working on two films simultaneously: an untitled F1 movie for Apple and Wolves, set for release in 2024, both of which are being produced by Plan B.
While a majority stake of the company was sold to French media company Mediawan, Pitt still retains a minority share. With his impressive financial gains, it seems the road ahead is boundless for Brad Pitt.
