HBO is taking its time with the development of the Jon Snow sequel in the Game of Thrones spinoff series, and for good reason. While several spinoffs are in the works, the Jon Snow sequel stands out as unique and risky. Discussions about continuing the exploration of Westeros began even before the conclusion of Game of Thrones. The first spinoff, House of the Dragon, was a clear success and is set to release its second season in 2024.

However, the Jon Snow sequel has not yet been given the green light by HBO, despite having a willing star and strong connections to the original series.

What sets the Jon Snow sequel apart from the other spinoffs is the fact that it is not based on anything written by George R. R. Martin, the author of the original Game of Thrones series. While House of the Dragon and other spinoffs are adapted from Martin's in-universe history books or bits of history he has revealed, the Jon Snow sequel continues the journey of a character created by Martin, whose own ending he has not yet written.
