Last year, Margot Robbie achieved immense success as both an actress and producer for the blockbuster comedy film "Barbie." Directed by Greta Gerwig and based on the popular dolls by Mattel, the movie became the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the highest-grossing film ever by a solo female director. With earnings of $1.4 billion, the film received Golden Globe nominations and made a significant impact beyond its commercial success.

One particularly controversial moment in the film was a monologue by America Ferrera's character, sparking discussions about the challenges women face in the world.

Robbie admitted that she couldn't believe the film was even allowed to be made, given its bold approach.

The production of "Barbie" marked a significant milestone, with Robbie becoming the first live-action actress to portray the iconic doll in a film. While several animated movies based on the children's toy have been made, a live-action adaptation had been in development for many years. After various setbacks since the 1980s, the project gained traction in 2016 when Amy Schumer was initially attached to star.

However, Schumer's departure due to creative differences led to consideration of Anne Hathaway for the role.

Margot Robbie entered negotiations for the film in 2018, aiming to expand her production company LuckyChap Entertainment's portfolio. She approached director Greta Gerwig, believing she was the perfect candidate to address important women's issues and treat the doll's cultural significance with respect. Gerwig, known for directing "Lady Bird" and "Little Women," joined the project, co-writing alongside Noah Baumbach. Together, they crafted a story about a doll embarking on an existential journey in the real world.

Robbie's portrayal of the Stereotypical Barbie character in the film explores themes of mortality and challenges the patriarchal society dominating the real world.
